Op' Stars - The Mobil Song Quest

Op' Stars is about great music and great talent. But it's also about hopes and dreams, success and failure, drama, bitchiness, passion, dedication, tears, disappointment and, of course, triumph.

The Mobil Song Quest has launched the careers of prominent New Zealand opera singers such as Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Dame Malvina Major as well as Dunedin's Jonathan Lemalu, who is now winning competitions in London almost at will. Apart from the prestige, it's a gig worth winning with over $50 000 in prize money up for grabs.

The documentary follows 12 semi-finalists auditioning, competing, winning and losing. During the hour we see their nerves and hear their voices. The suspense of the competition naturally builds to the show's climax where the winners are ecstatic or amazed. There are tears and hugs from co-workers and family. The ones who don't make it are bitterly disappointed, but try to hide it.

Op' Stars was directed by Gary Scott and produced by Gordon Harcourt for Television ONE with New Zealand On Air funding.
